The Crazy Horse Memorial is a work in progress in the Black Hills, not far from Mount Rushmore. The idea for a carving of Crazy Horse was conceived by Chief Standing Bear. He approached a famed sculptor - Korczak Ziolkowski - about the project and Ziolkowski spent the rest of his life on it.
The work began in 1948 and has progressed slowly, as my photos will show. Nonetheless, it is progressing with work now on the outstretched arm.
An extensive campus has grown up around the mountain, with an education center, museum, restaurants, and gift shops. It was quite crowded on our Sunday visit, as it seems many people make it part of a Black Hills visit.
