I lived in southwestern Ohio for 30 years, so I was quite familiar with the ancient mound-builder societies. I had visited mounds at Fort Ancient and Serpent Mound, but had not been to this site, despite it being less than two hours from my home.
This "site" is actually spread over several locations, all but one being within a few miles of each other. I stopped at the most distant one (Siep Mound) as it was along my way. I also wandered the field of mounds directly behind the Visitor's Center.
These were part of an extensive system of mounds stretching down toward the Ohio River. The mounds throughout Ohio are around 1000 to 1500 years old. Sadly, many mounds were destroyed in this area when the Army thought it would be a good idea to build a camp on top of them.
I had wanted to visit all of the sites, but after wandering around near the Visitor's Center, I decided to skip the others (for now). It was over 90℉, I had been going since 6:00 am, and I was beat (as the photo of me by the park sign belies). I headed for the motel!
