Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument is primarily an underwater park. Even more so than Buck Island or Salt River Bay, this site offers nothing on land at all. Supposedly, a small piece of land near Hurricane Hole, on the eastern side of St. John, is part of the Memorial and not part of the National Park. As a wannabe purist, I was tempted to venture to this point so I could say I, at a minimum, stood on land within the park boundaries. The $80 round-trip taxi fare discouraged this idea. This park does not appear to have concessionaires offering snorkeling trips to the reef (such as Buck Island Reef had). It primarily exists to protect the endangered coral reef around St. John. Park visitors are pretty much on their own if they wish to partake in any activities. The Visitor Center for the National Park doubles as a visitor center for this park, with Passport stamps and a single, combined park brochure covering both parks on St. John.
