Another southern Historical Park, another plantation. This one is a bit different, though. If your mind thinks of "Gone With the Wind's" Tara when you think of southern plantations, then think near opposite for Cane River.

There are actually two former plantations that make up this site, located about five miles apart. I only visited one of the sites, which appeared to be the larger of the two. The Visitor's Center was at this location, inside a general store that sat on the grounds, open for business, well into the 1980s.

Unlike the majestic plantation homes associated with South Carolina, this was a far more modest home. It was open for self-guided visits and, like similar other sites, the inside had signs in most rooms with information about the family and history of the lands. The house itself is just wood; no big stone pillars. There are several outbuilding including, of course, former slave quarters.

What is unusual here compared to most eastern plantations is that the same family lived here for over 150 years, well into the 1990s. The owner resisted selling to the Park Service, but his children convinced him that they could not maintain it anymore and the Park Service could. One can see in the kitchen the modernization.

It was a bit chilly and overcast on the day I visited. I guess every stop can't be sunny and nice.
