The damming of the Gunnison River created three lakes that provide opportunities to enjoy water sports and recreation. The dams also provide hydroelectric power to the area.
The western part of the Curecant NRA gives a preview of the upcoming Black Canyon of the Gunnison, with some spectacular canyons and cliffs carved out by the river,
