I had waited 41 years (since my first visit to St. Croix) to actually visit Fort Christiansvaern, the centerpiece of Christiansted National Historic Site. In my mind, I remembered it being red. It's yellow! It is also much smaller than I would have thought. The fort was one of three constructed to defend the harbor at Christiansted. They formed a triangle around the harbor being able to provide fire from multiple directions on any hostile ship.

Unfortunately, the fort was damaged by recent hurricanes and is just now being slowly repaired. Though the fort was open, and the park allegedly had an entrance fee (according to the website), the entrance station inside the gates was locked up tight. Two other nearby buildings that are part of the overall Historic Site - Customs House and Scale House - are also closed. There was a video playing in one of the rooms in the fort, but it was less about the fort and other buildings, and instead focused on the 2017 celebrations marking 100 years since the United States purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark.

Park information, brochures, and Passport stamps (for all three National Park units on St. Croix) are available across the street and up the stairs in the Park Service Administration Office.
