Much of the island of St. John is within the borders of Virgin Islands National Park. But unlike most National Parks on the mainland (and more like many National Forests), within the park boundaries are patchworks of private lands, homes, resorts, and businesses. I suspect this stems from them being grandfathered when the park was formed. Nonetheless, there is still plenty of untouched forest and beachfront land to enjoy. The park features many pristine beaches, especially across the northern coastline, which transition quickly into rugged forest covering much of the interior.

A campground is located at Cinnamon Bay and several hiking trails cross through the park. Access to most places in the park is fairly easy thanks to a taxi and transit system that covers the island.

For those willing to make the climb, a few trails lead to hilltops with excellent views of the islands. Others may be content to bask on a beach where the inlets and coves make for gentle waves. Boating and snorkeling are also popular, though more so at the neighboring Coral Reef National Monument.

A Visitor Center is located about a five-minute walk from the ferry docks and provides a wealth of information about both units on the island.
