In school, what little we learn of Andrew Johnson is that he was the first president to be impeached (before impeachment became the norm for every opposition Congress), and that he was acquitted by one vote.

It seems he was actually a rather complex man. A Democrat from a southern state who ran as Lincoln's vice-president in 1864, he tried to implement Lincoln's vision of reconstruction but lacked Lincoln's political skills, and was, in the eyes of the Republican majority, a southern Democrat.

He was a slave owner opposed to ending slavery, who ultimately freed his slaves and abolished slavery as military governor of Tennessee.

This site preserves his home in Greeneville, Tennessee, along with an earlier home and his tailor shop (his first "career").
