My trip home from Iowa would lead across Ohio, where I planned on seeing two National Park units. I was also passing close to the home of my college roommate, someone who has remained a close friend for over 45 years. A quick exchange of emails, and we agreed to meet near Old Man's Cave in Hocking Hills State Park.
Several trails lead out from the new Visitor's Center building - some going down into the gorge where the namesake cave, and other caves, are located. Others stay on the cliffs overlooking the gorge. We decided to use one of these trails, as going into the gorge was easy but implied a steep climb back out at some point.
We probably walked for around 1.5 hours in total catching up on life. After the hike, we headed into the Visitor's Center (it had been closed when we arrived). In the gift shop, I found that Ohio has implemented its own Passport-like program with a book containing pages for all state parks, and a stamp at each park. I would have stamped my National Park book had I not left it in the parking lot, a fair distance away.
We left the park and had a nice, buffet lunch in nearby Logan before parting ways. I only wish I had taken a few photos (other than the sign photo), but we were too engrossed in conversation!
