(Great food, weather, and parks. The Caribbean!)

(Group 13)

It's been a cool winter even in northern Florida, so 12 days in southern Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands were welcome. The weather cooperated and was as perfect as one could want.

This trip included both historic sites like De Soto National Monumnent and forts at San Juan National Historic Site and Christiansted National Historic Site as well as scenic and ecological sites like Salt River Bay, Buck Island National Monumnent, and Virgin Islands National Park.

Buck Island, Virgin Island Coral Reef, and Biscayne National Park all feature coral reefs making them "water parks". Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve feature the south Florida wetlands. Dry Tortugas National Park features a two-hour ferry ride to the fort on an island at the western end of the Florida Keys.

It was a busy and sometimes hectic two weeks, but very enjoyable too.

Park units visited during this trip

Click on any of the parks listed below to see the page specific to that park.

The park page will have my comments about the site, photos and links to both the NPS official page and my blog entry for the park.

The interactive map in the top right of this page shows the location of each unit. You can zoom in and move around on the map. The rectangle icon in the top right will expand the map to full screen. Clicking on any unit in the map will open a small information window. The map and icons on it are based on the same information found in the Google Earth KML files, which you can create and download from the Home page.
