After a morning chasing a good view of Great Egg Harbor River, I headed south to the very tip of New Jersey - the city of Cape May and Cape May Point State Park.
The two major feature of this park are the nice beach and the lighthouse. For a price, one can climb up the staircase inside of the lighthouse, but I passed on that opportunity.
I did stop at the base and read the several placards describing the history of the lighthouse along with the local ecology.
I also strolled onto the beach. Cape May sites at the tip of a small peninsula jutting south into the ocean. On the west is Delaware Bay, fed by the Delaware River. On the east is the Atlantic Ocean. To the south, and what I was now viewing, it the meeting of the bay and the ocean. A ten-mile ferry ride south-southwest from Cape May will bring one to Lewes, Delaware.
I noticed a large concrete bunker located on the beach. In the visitor center, I asked about it and had correctly surmised that it was left over from WWII, part of the coastal defenses built during the war. It is no longer safe to enter, so I wonder if it will eventually be removed, but it is a nice piece of history.
My stay at the park was not too long since I was not going into the water, nor up the lighthouse. It was still another place to learn a bit of history.
