A promotion by Hilton Hotels offering three free nights in Las Vegas prompted me to rearrange several groups. As I would only spend a week on this trip, this group was reduced to seven sites across Nevada and southern California.

I will return to Lake Mead, a site visited 17 years ago, but will this time take the tour of Hoover Dam.

After visiting Tule Springs Fossil Beds, a site currently sharing a visitor center with Desert National Wildlife Refuge, I'll head through Mojave National Monument. Castle Mountain National Monument is an enclave within Mojave, accessible by a 10 mile dirt road.

Continuing to the southwest, I'll check out the rare Joshua tree in the national park that shares that name, before reaching San Diego and Cabrillo National Monument, the furthest southwest I will travel on the continent.

After a long drive back to Vegas, the trip will conclude with a day visit to Death Valley National Park.
