Heading south for warmer weather!
It’s been a cooler than normal winter in northern Florida this year. That was not an influence in my decision of which group to visit in January, as that decision was made in late spring last year. However, the group on which I had decided was the one that included southern Florida, Puerto Rico and the U. S. Virgin Islands.
This was the most complicated trip I have planned to date. To visit Dry Tortugas National Park, one need reservations on a ferry contracted with the Park Service. I needed to make that reservation as early as possible to ensure we got the dates we wanted. With needed flights to the Caribbean islands, it was impertive that all other dates like hotels and ferrys fell in place.
The trip also involved a flight to San Juan, a flight to St Croix, a flight between St Croix and St Thomas and a flight back to Miami. I also rented a car in St Croix, though only for one day. I originally had a car rented for San Juan but decided it would be more of a hassle than just using taxis. And there was the snorkeling trip!
Anyway, all the plans were made and everything seems to have fallen in place. I will have a traveling companion on this trip, which means someone to laugh at me on that snorkeling trip to Buck Island Reef National Memorial!
In total, we will visit ten sites on this trip starting with De Soto National Memorial and ending at Biscayne National Park. Four of the sites are National Parks with the rest a mix of Historical Sites, Monuments and Memorials.
And all have forecasted highs in the 80s!
