My visit to Waco Mammoth National Monument in the morning did not take as long as I had allowed. After grabbing lunch nearby, I pulled up my tablet and looked for somewhere to visit in the afternoon. Partway between where I was in Waco and my planned hotel for that evening was Fort Boggy State Park.

Lake at FOrt Boggy State Park, Texas

This is not a historical site, despite its name. There was a “Fort Boggy” here though it was more of a lone block house, built in 1839. It long ago disappeared to the forces of nature and time. The park that bears the fort’s name is purely a recreational facility, though a brief mention is made in literature about the fort.

The park has a small lake at its heart, with picnic tables and grills along its western shore. The park is over 1800 acres, though only a small part – from the entrance to the lake – is paved road. Hiking trails cover much of the rest of the park, with primitive campsites scattered along the trail. Cabins are also available for rent.

It was a beautiful winter’s day – sunny but chilly. I parked and headed down to the lake, finding a picnic table on which to simply relax for an hour or so, enjoying the outdoors before heading on to my evening’s destination.
