Trip 2 Goes Up the Coast

A Preview of Trip 2, Group 12

Group number 12 looks like will become trip number 2 for me. This will be my first trip specifically intended to visit National Park sites. In total, I’ll be stopping at eleven park sites up the southeastern Atlantic Coast starting here in Florida.

I chose this because it kept things kind of close to home. This is still a bit of a learning experience for these trips. For example, I made the discovery while starting to plan this trip that not every National Park site is open every single day. That made some of the planning a little bit more difficult as I had to ensure that the ones I decided I wanted to visit would be open when I wanted to visit.

When the final plan came together I did have an open day when I would be in Charleston, South Carolina, so I added to visit a county park, which is actually an old plantation.

Most of the sites on this trip our old forts. It will be interesting to learn the history surrounding those forts. In just reading the brief write-ups on the National Park Service website it does sound like there is a lot of history that will be learned on this trip.

This group seems ideally suited for an early November trip. The weather should still be fairly nice in the southeast. I had originally hoped to start this trip in October but my time was consumed over the last few months dealing with my father’s passing and making sure that my mother was taken care of. Fortunately, she lives very close to me and is still fully capable herself.

In addition to the several forts in this group, I’ll be visiting two national seashores. One is Canaveral National Seashore where, if I time it correctly, there should be a rocket launch on the day I’m there. The other national seashore is Cumberland Island. I’m not really sure what to expect here as there’s a forty-minute ferry ride just to get to the island and then you’re kind of on your own. The ferry back is six hours later. I did sign up for a van tour of the island that may be interesting and will consume most of the day.

Otherwise, I am looking forward to getting started on the first full trip dedicated to my adventure of visiting all the park sites.
